Commandos to storm the Liberty Stadium

Commandos to storm the Liberty Stadium
Friday 04 Apr 2008 [15:13]

Swansea City fans are in for some thrilling entertainment against Bournemouth - on and off the pitch - and for Royal Marine Commando and Swans fan Christopher Hunter it'll be a dream come true.

Sergeant Hunter, 32, known as Taff to his friends, is part of the Royal Marines Commando Display Team (RMCDT) who will be abseiling into Liberty Stadium before the match starts, accompanied by mascot Cyril the Swan, then treating football fans to an exciting unarmed combat display at half time.

The 28 members of RMCDT, who all wear the Royal Marine Commando's green beret - a hallmark indicating those wearing it have passed a gruelling and physically demanding 32 week training course required to become a member of the UK's elite fighting force - have served all over the world, including Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Royal Marines Commando Display Team are trained specialists in unarmed combat, fast roping from helicopters, abseiling, fast boat displays and qualified climbing supervisors.

Based at Royal Naval Air Station, Yeovilton, the RMCDT travels the length of the British Isles raising the profile of the Corps and demonstrating the skills needed to be a Royal Marine Commando.

Sergeant Hunter, a former pupil at Dillwyn Llewellyn School in Swansea said: "It's a real honour for me to be involved in this important home match, particularly when I'm such a big Swans fan myself.

"Being here also gives me the opportunity to showcase my other great passion in life, that of being a Royal Marine Commando.

"I just hope that we will bring the team good luck and we win the game."

The Commandos will be dropping in at the Liberty Stadium at 2:40pm, so take your seats early for some thrilling pre-match entertainment.
