Every year Cardiff University and Swansea University compete for the Welsh Varsity Shield. Being second only in size to the Oxford and Cambridge game, and this year's spectacle will be held at the Liberty Stadium on 28th April, 2010.

The Inaugural Welsh Varsity Match was first played in 1987 in the Welsh Capital and home of Cardiff Rugby Football Club, Cardiff Arms Park. All proceeds from the event were donated to Oxfam.

In the early years, the Welsh Varsity Match was held on alternate years at Cardiff Arms Park and St Helens, the home of Swansea Rugby Club. From 2003 the game was held the neutral ground of the Brewery field in Bridgend before returning to Cardiff Arms Park in 2007.

The Welsh Varsity match has developed into a showpiece event for talented young rugby playing students, who use the occasion to represent their respective Universities and showcase their talent.

Many students have gone on to represent and gain contracts with semi-professional and professional clubs on the back of great performances in the Welsh Varsity Match. Previous teams fielded by Swansea University have included Welsh internationals Alun-Wyn Jones, Richie Pugh and Dwayne Peel.
